MEP Cretu hopeful local elections bring about paradigm shift, install visionary people in office

Published on

MEP Corina Cretu said that she wants local elections to bring about a paradigm shift in Romania, as it takes people with vision to put to use the opportunities offered by European, national or local funds and not let them go wasted.

„The citizens of Romania will choose their local representatives in a poll which I hope will contribute to improving people’s lives and to the development of localities. I hope that the upcoming local elections will bring about a paradigm shift in Romania: there is a need for people with vision, so that the opportunities offered by European, national or local funds don’t go wasted. Otherwise, the citizens’ needs will never get out of the state of promise. The Urban Agenda I launched in my former capacity as European Commissioner for Regional Policy aims to provide cities with the support they need in order to develop. It represents, in fact, a transfer of responsibility towards local public governments, which means that their role in the people’s everyday life is increasing,” Cretu wrote on Facebook.

The MEP also said that during her tenure as a European Commissioner she took all the steps to mandate that at least 10 percent of the amount allocated to a country is made available to localities, which would thus become directly responsible for both the realization and the implementation of the projects.

„I therefore hope that the local elections will be a competition of ideas, that they generate debates and a battle of projects benefiting the people and local communities,” the MEP added.
