PSD MEP Victor Negrescu believes that the upcoming international meetings are essential for the stability of Europe, and Romania must be prepared for any scenario.
„The meetings in the coming days are essential for the stability of our continent. All the discussions I had with American partners in Washington and with European leaders in different capitals show that the peace plan being negotiated now will decisively influence whether and how we can protect ourselves from those who threaten the sovereignty of our nations. Romania is directly interested in these decisions – we need a solution that guarantees peace, security, sovereignty and our European future,” Negrescu conveyed in a press release sent to the media on Sunday.
According to him, the international meetings will address essential issues such as: the path to peace, security guarantees, the level of involvement of European states, reconstruction, who will manage the peace negotiations, long-term solutions, energy security and strengthening strategic alliances.
„We need a clear strategy to prevent future conflicts and to support a fair and lasting agreement that ensures the stability of the region. A US-Europe agreement on the peace plan is necessary,” says the MEP.
In his opinion, any plan must include firm measures for border protection and the defense of sovereignty, including regarding cybersecurity and foreign interference. Romania, being at the border of the conflict, must be actively involved in these decisions.
At the same time, Negrescu says that the guarantees must also include the Republic of Moldova.
„The European Union must act united for peace within an international mandate that prevents any escalation of the conflict. Romania must ensure that the support is fair and that our interests are protected. (…) This is a vital process not only for the affected regions but also for Romania’s economy. Investment opportunities and partnerships for Romanian companies will influence our future development. Reconstruction must also be funded from Russian assets. (…) Romania must be present at the decision-making table, not just take note of the imposed solutions. European leaders are most likely to appoint a chief negotiator. (…) This is not just about ending a conflict, but about building a system that prevents future aggression. Romania needs security and predictability,” Victor Negrescu further explained.
He believes that Romania and Europe must reduce their dependence on the energy resources of other countries, and accelerating investments in infrastructure and domestic resources is essential.
„Transatlantic relations and cooperation at NATO level must be strengthened. At the same time, Europe must expand its strategic and economic cooperation with all states that share the values of democracy and common security,” the PSD MEP added.
He said that next week he will participate, as Vice-President of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (PES), in a high-level meeting with the President of the European Council and social-democratic heads of state and government.
„The future is not won by waiting, but by decisive action. Romania must be an active, strong, and respected actor in these negotiations,” concluded the social-democratic MEP.
