The Working Group for Schengen Matters will have a first discussion on Tuesday regarding the EU Council’s resolution proposal regarding the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area, MEP of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Victor Negrescu posted on his Facebook page on Monday, according to Agerpres.
Moreover, on this occasion „there will be analysed the partial conclusions of the report carried out by the European Commission regarding border protection by Romania and Bulgaria, with positive results for our country.”
„What is concerning is that, in parallel, separately from Romania and Bulgaria, there is a resolution proposal regarding Croatia, which can lead to a separate accession to the Schengen Area,” Negrescu estimated, who is also the Vice-President of the Party of European Socialists (PES).
The MEP also stated that within this week’s meeting of the European Commission, „at the initiative of the Social Democrat Commissioners, also discussed will be the direct and clear involvement of the European Executive for the endorsement of Romania’s and Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen.”
He mentioned that, in view of the Justice and Home Affairs Council’s (JHA) meeting on 8-9 December, when a decision is to be adopted regarding Romania’s accession to Schengen, there are several key-moments.
„The first one, approximately one week prior to the ministers’ meeting, when the standpoints of the member states are to be adopted in the national Parliaments, and the second one, on 30 November, when meetings are to take place, both in Coreper II format [the Committee of the Permanent Representatives of the Governments of the Member States to the European Union] and that of the working group for Schengen Matters, where there will be defining debates for the final decision,” Negrescu also stated.
