Meteorologists recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.3 degrees Celsius during the night at Balea Lac, marking the coldest May 12 night in the past 46 years, as the previous record stood at minus 5.5 degrees in 1979, according to meteorologist Narcisa Milian, spokesperson for the Regional Weather Forecast Service within the South Transylvania Regional Meteorological Centre.
„At Balea, the maximum temperature was the lowest on record for that day – minus 1.8 degrees yesterday, compared to minus 1.4 degrees in 2001. The minimum temperature was minus 6.3 compared to minus 5.5 degrees in 1979,” explained meteorologist Narcisa Milian.
According to the same source, Monday was the coldest May 12 at Balea Lac in the past 24 years.
On Tuesday morning, meteorologists measured a snow layer of 6 centimetres at Balea Lac, located at over 2,000 metres altitude in the Fagaras Mountains, where access is only possible by cable car.
Snow removal operations on National Road 7C – Transfagarasan have been halted due to recent snowfall. Road workers aim to complete the snow clearing by the end of the month in order to open the road to traffic one month earlier than usual, from kilometre 104+000 (Piscu Negru) to kilometre 130+800 (Balea Cascada). The usual date for reopening road traffic on DN 7C – Transfagarasan is July 1, according to the Brasov Regional Directorate of Roads and Bridges.
