On February 7, in full protest of European farmers, the debate on „Empowering farmers and rural communities – a dialogue for a sustainable and fairly remunerated EU agriculture” took place in plenary.
Here is the position I expressed on the subject:
The European agricultural sector has reached a crisis situation expressed with legitimate anger by Romanian farmers and many other member states, because the current European Commission subordinated the Common Agricultural Policy to the new direction it imposed on Europe, the Green Pact, without to take into account economic, geostrategic and social realities.
The proof is also the most recent reasons for farmers to revolt: the legislation regarding the restoration of nature, which wanted to remove from the agricultural circuit some significant areas, respectively the one regarding pesticides, which would have seriously affected production. This, at a time when the Commission is barely negotiating free trade agreements, showing itself very eager to open the European market wide to products from Latin America and New Zealand obtained without the environmental constraints of the EU and, implicitly, without the related standards and prices .
Once again it is proven how harmfully this European Commission managed its mandate, which succeeded in the counter-performance of blocking the economy in the name of green ideology. Those of us who have lived in the socialist system have seen the dead end of the ideological dictate on the economy. The Commission’s last-minute concessions do not deceive us. That’s why I ask the EU Council to watch over food security and the guarantee of decent incomes for farmers.
