Mihai Tudose – European Parliament Report (IV): European support for Romania

Published on

Among the subjects that I addressed in this mandate, considering them to be of interest to the country, were: the consolidation of the European defense industry through joint public procurement, the food security of citizens and the viability of agriculture, the delays recorded in the realization of the trans-European transport network , reducing the skills deficit in disadvantaged areas, in rural areas and among young people.

„The digital transition risks increasing the gaps and depriving children, especially from the new member states and especially from rural areas, of access to quality education and reading. And the consequences will be harmful for the whole society, considering the shortage of skills and labor in the EU” – I emphasized in an interview.

Another initiative we had is that of locating the headquarters of the future European customs authority in Bucharest.

At the same time, as a former representative of Romania at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, where I addressed the subject in the past, I pointed out, in the questioning „Bâstroe Canal Crisis – Destruction of the Danube Delta”, that „since 2004, Ukraine has been systematically destroying, through the works on the Bâstroe Canal , the unique ecosystem of the Danube Delta. The project was rejected by all international forums, because it violates the environmental and protection rules of the Danube waters”.

At the same time, I notified the European Commission about the fact that „Romania ensures the transit of two thirds of Ukraine’s grain exports. This effort on the part of my country involves a massive strain on the transport infrastructure. Is the European Commission considering increasing the support budget for solidarity corridors? How does the Commission concretely intend to support Romania’s infrastructure to face the major challenge it faces? I have in mind here, not the classic EU funding programs, but the specific response to this completely atypical and very serious situation”.

Also, as a Brailean, I supported measures to boost small-scale fishing – a sector that comprises three quarters of the EU’s active fishing vessels and half of their crews.
