As a member of the EU-Republic of Moldova Delegation, I constantly expressed my firm support for the European anchoring of the Republic of Moldova and acted concretely, especially through the reports I drafted on behalf of the S&D Group, for the liberalization of EU- Moldova, for the macro-financial assistance granted to Chisinau by the EU, as well as for the EU-Moldova association agreement.
Consequently, decisions were adopted to help the Romanians across the Prut, in the difficult context of the war in Ukraine. From 2022, thanks to the temporary trade liberalization measures – which were renewed and supplemented, then, every year – a number of fruits and vegetables exported by the Republic of Moldova were exempted from paying customs duties in the EU. And in 2023, as an alternative rapporteur*, I supported the doubling of EU assistance for the Republic of Moldova. The initial amount of 150 million euros was supplemented with another 145 million, in order to mitigate the negative impact of the war on the economy of the Republic of Moldova.
At the same time, we supported the agreement between the EU and Moldova on the road transport of goods, which replaced the bilateral agreements. Through this act, the quotas imposed on road freight transport operators from both sides were eliminated. The Republic of Moldova thus obtained the possibility to export its own goods more easily.
*The political groups in the European Parliament designate an alternative rapporteur for each report examined in the specialized committee, to follow its evolution and negotiate the final text with the rapporteur.
