Military and religious ceremony at Caraiman Cross

Published on

The Ministry of National Defence (MApN) organises a military and religious ceremony on Friday at the Memorial Cross of the Romanian Heroes of the First World War on Caraiman Peak, an event that will be attended by military and civilian officials and members of the clergy.

Between 2016 and 2020, MApN implemented the project „Crucea Caraiman” (Caraiman Cross) or the Heroes’ Monument (Cross) on Caraiman Peak, in the spirit of respect for Romanian history and military traditions and to honour the Romanian military and civilians who in dramatic moments of history have done their duty for their country.

The monument is in the shape of a Latin cross, with a height of 39.3 meters and was built between 1924 and 1928 on Caraiman Peak, at an altitude of 2,291 meters, to honour the memory of the 30,000 Romanian soldiers who died in the fighting in the Prahova Valley during the First World War.

The architectural ensemble entered the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s highest cross on a mountain peak.
