Ministry of Foreign Affairs hails anniversary of United Nations Day

Published on

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hails the anniversary, on October 24, of the United Nations Day, emphasising that the support and consolidation of multilateralism, centered on the UN system, remain essential and represent the only potentially effective and adequate response to the scale and complexity of the global crises that simultaneously affect UN member states.

According to a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent to AGERPRES on Thursday, this annual event marks, throughout the world, the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945, through the ratification by the majority of the signatory states, including the five permanent members of the Security Council.

„The 79th anniversary of the UN Charter takes place in a complex context, marked by a series of major global crises, such as the conflicts that continue to affect some of the member states, climate change, pollution, food insecurity, the reduction biodiversity, the slow pace of meeting the objectives of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda or the narrowing of the democratic space,” the press release states.

A topical and highly relevant objective on the current agenda of the United Nations is the management of major threats to international peace and security, an aspect of particular interest for Romania, as well as for Europe, in the context of the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the MAE emphasises.

„The topicality of the subject is also demonstrated by the worrying developments in the Middle East and the Sahel, by the recrudescence of terrorism and by the worrying developments in the field of disarmament and arms control at the global level,” reads the same press release.

The MAE believes, as a reaction to all these challenges, that supporting and strengthening multilateralism, centered on the UN system, remains essential and constitutes the only potentially effective and adequate response to the scale and complexity of the global crises that simultaneously affect the UN member states.

„The global organization continues to represent the most suitable forum for trying to mobilize the capacities necessary to identify effective, long-term solutions, as recent developments have shown, especially on the occasion of the High-Level Segment of the UN General Assembly, in September 2024. Thus, the adoption of the Pact for the Future represents a major opportunity for strengthening multilateralism and global governance, for the adequate management of current and future challenges at the global level and for adapting the UN and its capacities to the current context and medium-term outlook,” the press release says.

At the same time, Romania will continue to assert itself as an active supporter and defender of the achievements of multilateral diplomacy, and the framework offered by the global organization will continue to be exploited by our country for the promotion of national foreign policy initiatives, in full agreement with the purpose and the principles of the UN Charter, through the active involvement of the MAE and national institutions in the three major areas of activity of the Organization.

„MAE supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and will continue to promote and capitalize on Romania’s profile as an actor engaged in the field of human rights and as a defender of the rules and the rule of law, which our country also strengthens by currently exercising its membership in The UN Human Rights Council, in the period 2023-2025,” said the MAE.
