The Deputy Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, Mircea Geoana, late on Sunday evening stated that his decision regarding his candidacy for president is one that is personal, but he will make the official announcement as soon as his NATO term in office ends, in the following days.
„At the political and institutional level, I have to observe the rules of the game at NATO and I will make the formal, official announcement as soon as my term in office ends, which will happen in the next period,” Geoana told Digi 24 private television broadcaster late on Sunday evening.
He admitted that his decision to enter the presidential race for Cotroceni is not an easy one.
„It’s a decision that involves a certain degree of responsibility on a personal level, while considering the family, friends, people who support me – this is not something to just play with. (…) I talked to a lot, a lot of people, I went a lot around the country, I talked to the diaspora, I talked to entrepreneurs, I talked to simple people, I talked to Romanian men and women from all over the country and from the diaspora and I think that at the moment Romania and Romanians and Romanian women are ready for a real change,’, he stated.
In his opinion, these presidential elections are probably the most important that Romania has had „in the last, if not 35, at least 20 years.”
„I hope with all my heart that all Romanians, and also the other ethnicities, the Romanian diaspora, as well, will come in very large numbers to vote, because our future is being decided, and not for 5 years or for 10 years, for a president or for a government, two or five, but for many, many generations to follow,” said Geoana.
