Addressing some topics that concern Romanians has nothing to do with „preparation of any alleged candidacy”, stated in a speech held in Cluj-Napoca the Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Mircea Geoana, according to Agerpres.
The speech was held during the event „Crisis of development inequalities. How do we transform economic growth into social welfare?”, organized by the Friederich Ebert Foundation and the Romania 2030 Association Cluj-Napoca.
The official recalled that he spoke recently, at the Academy of Economic Sciences, about the need to achieve a historic development leap for Romania, proposing five national objectives „to be negotiated and assumed by all relevant actors in society, beyond electoral cycles and leaders politics of the moment”, and some commentators read his message „in an electoral key”.
„My interest in Romanian politics is very low. Talking about the big topics that concern Romanians, be they political, economic or social, has nothing to do with the preparation of any alleged candidacy. The way I see things, the obligation of a leader is to give his country all the experience, devotion and love he is capable of. I will continue to do this regardless of the position I hold”, stressed Geoana.
He referred, in the speech given in Cluj-Napoca, to social injustice, to the increasing inequality between the rich and the poor and to the „Romanian paradox”, which manifests itself „in the reality that a rich country is full of poor people”.
„The Romanian paradox, in which the economy grows and the country collapses, is experiencing its glory days today. Romania is pressed by crises, it is true, but it contents itself only with seeing the dangers and refuses to see the opportunities. A new architecture of opportunities needs sometimes a shake-up to shake things up, to move the economy and society, to give courage to the leaders. Maybe, in the end, history knows better than the politicians when it’s time to shake a country”, said Mircea Geoana.
He also presented a series of solutions for overcoming the situation in which Romania finds itself.
„First of all, as Minouche Shafik says, let’s enter into a renegotiation between the actors in society of the current Social Contract, obviously expired and dangerous for the future of the country. Without this fundamental thing, any amendment to the Constitution or increases in the social budgets will not they will only patch the bag and steal our hat. Here, the role of political leaders is essential. We need, of course, political consensus and legislative guarantees. We need a moratorium around the New National Project, with a Contract at its center Social for the 21st century assumed by everyone”, argued Geoana.
In his opinion, the state „must equip the central and local administration with a new culture of efficiency and solidarity”, but it is also necessary to involve the other actors in society in a „crusade against injustice”. Also, all citizens must have equal access to education, jobs, financing, to the „redistribution of rights and money”.
„Will we have the strength to dare and change the selfish and indifferent Romania of today with the just and fair Romania of tomorrow? A Romania where each of us, regardless of where we are born and social status, gender or race, gets a fair chance to fulfill the potential and to have a decent life? If we don’t do that, we will continue to survive and possibly succeed on our own, but continue, increasingly frustrated, to struggle as a nation on the periphery of Europe. And hang on of the illusion that the next elections will bring the promised and never-honored change. Until we solve this fundamental problem, the country will not get better,” concluded Mircea Geoana.
