Natural growth of population remains negative in May

The natural increase of Romania’s population remained negative in May of this year, at minus 7,375 people, according to the data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), write Agerpres.

In May 2023, the birth of 13,242 children was registered, with 2,534 more than in April 2023, while the number of registered deaths was 20,617 (10,815 men and 9,802 women), with 1,007 deaths (676 men and 331 women) more more than in the previous month. The number of deaths of children under the age of 1, recorded in May 2023, was 87 children, an increase of 22 compared to April 2023.

According to the INS, in May 2023, 66.9% of the total number of deaths occurred in people aged at least 70 (8,581 deaths, representing 41.6%, in people aged 80 and over; 5,220 deaths, representing 25.3% for people aged 70-79) and 18.1%, representing 3,727 deaths, in people aged 60-69. At the opposite pole, the fewest deaths were recorded in the age groups 0-4 years (107 deaths), 20-29 years (77 deaths) and 5-19 years (55 deaths).

According to the main cause of death, most people who died in May 2023 had as causes: diseases of the circulatory system (11,048 people, representing 53.6%), tumors (4,006 people, representing 19.4%) and diseases of the respiratory system ( 1,801 people, representing 8.7%).

In May 2023, 10,185 marriages were registered at civil status offices, 2,595 more than in April 2023. The number of divorces pronounced by final court decisions and according to Law no. 202/2010 was 1,860 in May 2023, 8 more than in April 2023.

Also, the number of live births registered in May 2023 was lower by 1,640 compared to the same month in 2022. The natural increase was negative both in May 2023 (-7,375 people) and in May 2022 (-5,754 people). The number of people who died in May 2023 was 19 less compared to May 2022. After the first three main causes of death, in May 2023 compared to May 2022, there were 322 fewer deaths caused by diseases of the circulatory system, with 172 more deaths due to tumors and 115 more deaths caused by diseases of the respiratory system. The number of children under one year of age who died was 9 more in May 2023 than the one recorded in May 2022.

In May 2023, the death of 10,412 people (5,447 men and 4,965 women) was recorded in the urban environment, and the death of 10,205 people (5,368 men and 4,837 women) in the rural environment. Compared to the same month in 2022, the number of people who died increased by 286 people (41 men and 245 women) in urban areas and decreased by 305 people (152 men and 153 women) in rural areas.

The number of marriages was, in May 2023, 1,200 lower than the one recorded in the same month of the previous year. Through final judicial decisions and according to Law no. 202/2010 in May 2023 there were 258 fewer divorces than in May 2022.
