New car registrations up 52.6pct in August 2025 against August 2024

New car registrations increased by 52.6% in Romania, in August 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year, while ecological cars reported a jump, overall, of 74.4%, and a market share of 59.9%, show data analyzed by the Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA), released on Wednesday.

According to the same source, cars (which represent approximately 89% of the total market) recorded, in the reference interval, a volume of 15,043 units, while in terms of market share, the SUV segment ranks first, with 55.1% (+60.6%), followed by Class C – with 25.3% (+34.6%) and Class B – with 14.2% (+86.6%).

By type of fuel, in August of this year, compared to the same period in 2024, gasoline engines increased by 27.8%, to a share of 33.4%, while diesel engines saw an increase of 31%, to 6.7%.

As for cars equipped with mild-hybrid engines, they recorded an increase in registrations of 55%, reaching a share of 24.2% of the total car market. „It is worth noting that, of the total mild-hybrid engines, 86% are gasoline engines, while only 14% are diesel engines,” emphasises APIA.

On the other hand, electric cars (which can be charged from an external source of electricity – BEV and PHEV), as well as mild-hybrid and full hybrid cars (which also have electric propulsion without charging from an external source of electricity) held, in August, a market share of 59.9%, being the most important segment on the Romanian market, which far exceeds the share held by gasoline and diesel engines together.

Within this margin, fully electric cars hold a 6.3% share of the market, and plug-in hybrid cars 6.6%.

In the first eight months of the current year, the top three best-selling 100% electric cars are: Dacia Spring – with 1,163 units and a decrease of 47% compared to the same period of the previous year, followed by Hyundai Kona (441) and Tesla Model 3 (305).

In the Plug-In car category, the top 3 models are led by: Hyundai Tucson – with 447 units and an increase of 85%, from one year to another, Ford Kuga – with 445 units, and Toyota RAV4 (361).

Also, hybrid cars, without recharging from external sources, rank first, in the first eight months of 2025, Toyota Corolla – with 2,848 units and an increase of 16%, while Dacia Duster is in second position, with 2,297 units, and Toyota Yaris Cross completes the podium, with 1,856 units.

According to official statistics, at the end of August this year, in the mild hybrid car segment, the Dacia Duster model is in first place, with 4,638 units, followed by Hyundai Tucson – with 1,408 units, and Suzuki S-Cross (1,114).

Light commercial vehicles and minibuses saw an increase of 8.9% in August 2025 compared to the same month in 2024, of which light commercial vehicles except fpr minibuses reported an increase of only 0.8%. In contrast, electric light commercial vehicles reached, in the first eight months of the current year, a volume of 424 units, compared to 423 units, in the same period last year.

Regarding the registrations of heavy commercial vehicles and buses, they were up 19.4% in August, of which heavy commercial vehicles over 16 tonnes plus tractors saw an increase of 19.2%.
