On Friday, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu had an informal meeting with his Hungarian counterpart, Viktor Orban, the discussions focusing on topics of common interest on the bilateral agenda of the two states, but also support for accession to the Schengen area with the land borders as well.
The chairman of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), Kelemen Hunor, also participated in the meeting that took place during a private breakfast.
„Today I had a pragmatic discussion with the Prime Minister of Hungary, Mr. Viktor Orban, on the subjects of common interest of our bilateral cooperation. Our trade exchanges amount to approximately 13 billion euros and I agreed together with my Hungarian counterpart that there is still unexploited potential. I told Prime Minister Orban that we want to work together for the consolidation of a positive bilateral agenda, for the benefit of our citizens, regardless of ethnicity. During the discussions, we agreed to start the feasibility studies on the implementation of a flag project at the bilateral level – the Budapest-Bucharest high-speed railway link, a strategic project of regional interest, with an impact on the railway networks in the Central European region,” Marcel Ciolacu wrote on his Facebook page.
At the same time, the head of the Bucharest gov’t thanked Viktor Orban for „unequivocally supporting Romania’s accession to the Schengen area with the land borders too”.
„Hungary holds the Presidency of the EU Council this semester, and, in this capacity, Romania relies on Hungary’s honest action to consolidate the European Strategic Agenda. At the same time, I thanked Prime Minister Viktor Orban for his unequivocal support of Romania’s accession to the Schengen area with the land borders as well,” Ciolacu also said.
In continuation of his presence in Romania, the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, will be present at the Summer University of Baile Tusnad, where on Saturday he will give his traditional speech starting from the central theme of the event, „On the right path”.
As part of the Summer University, 500 programs will be held in 34 tents, with various themes, from economic and political to cultural, gastronomic or sports, with 300 organizers involved in the preparation of the event.
