At least 632 people died in a powerful earthquake that struck Morocco overnight Friday into Saturday, causing enormous damage and causing panic in the popular tourist destination of Marrakech and several other cities, according to a new official toll quoted by AFP.

The National Center for Scientific and Technical Research (CNRST), based in Rabat, indicated that the earthquake had a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale, and its epicenter was located in Al-Haouz province, southwest of the city of Marrakech, a very popular destination among foreign tourists.

More than 300 people were injured, of whom 51 are in serious condition. According to the Moroccan media, this is one of the strongest earthquakes that have hit the kingdom so far.
