Poland, a NATO member country that borders Ukraine, on which Russia launched an invasion, will increase its national defense budget to 4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2023, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced on Monday, AFP informs, Agerpres reads.

„(Russia’s) war on Ukraine makes us arm ourselves even faster. For this reason, we will make an unprecedented effort, (allocating) 4% of GDP to the Polish army,” Morawiecki told journalists, from a military base in Siedlce, eastern Poland.

„This will probably be the highest level of military spending among all NATO member countries,” added the head of the Polish government, without specifying the exact source of the additional spending.

According to a NATO report, last year Poland allocated more than 2.4% of its GDP to defense, which placed it in third place within the North Atlantic Alliance, after Greece (3.76% of GDP) and the USA (3.47%).
