The Revolution of 1848 marked the emergence of a generation of visionaries and fighters who, through courage and ideals, laid the foundation for modern Romania, said interim Prime Minister Catalin Predoiu on Wednesday, on the occasion of the Victory Day of the 1848 Revolution and Romanian Democracy.
‘On June 11, we celebrate the Victory Day of the 1848 Revolution and Romanian Democracy, the day on which the Provisional Revolutionary Government of Wallachia was officially recognised and the Proclamation of Izlaz was promulgated – one of the founding acts of the modern Romanian state. The Revolution of 1848 gave rise to a generation of visionaries and fighters who, through courage and ideals, laid the foundation for modern Romania. This generation strongly believed in liberty, justice, equality, civic responsibility and national fraternity. They not only dreamed but also acted – with vision and determination – for an independent, modern, and unified Romania,’ Predoiu emphasised.
According to him, the ‘golden generation’ of the 19th century united national ideals with pragmatic reforms, and from that ‘flame of dignity and hope’ were born, one by one: the Union of the Principalities in 1859, a decisive step toward national unity; the War of Independence in 1877-1878, through which Romania gained recognition of its sovereignty; modern constitutions and democratic institutions that shaped the evolution of the Romanian rule of law.
‘The 1848 revolutionaries did not just build ideas, they set in motion a whole political and social transformation, whose fruits we still see today. They left us a legacy of honour: that Romania is built through values, sacrifice and solidarity,’ said Predoiu.
The interim Prime Minister also stressed that democracy is not a permanently secured achievement, but something that must be nurtured.
‘The Government of Romania pays tribute to those who had the courage to change the course of history and reaffirms its commitment to preserving and strengthening democracy, the rule of law and European values. Democracy is not a good won once and for all. It must be nurtured through education, defended through smart and constitutional political action, developed by embedding it in the spirit and soul of citizens, and passed on with generosity every day, from generation to generation, for the freedom and prosperity of the people and the nation. Honour to the generation of 1848!,’ Predoiu added.
The Victory Day of the 1848 Revolution and Romanian Democracy was established by Law No. 27 of January 10, 2023.
