Acting President Ilie Bolojan had a telephone conversation on Tuesday with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, in which he highlighted Romania’s priorities on the EU agenda, with a special focus on regional security and defense, as well as on support for Ukraine.

„Very good phone conversation today with Antonio Costa, President of the European Council. I highlighted Romania’s priorities on the EU agenda, with a special focus on regional security and defence, as well as on our support for Ukraine. Unity and coordination remain essential in this challenging period”, Ilie Bolojan wrote on the X platform.

According to a press release from the Presidential Administration, the two leaders discussed current topics on the European Council agenda, emphasizing the regional security situation and the European Union’s support for Ukraine.

Ilie Bolojan assured Antonio Costa of his support for a unified and coordinated approach at the Union level. In this context, he welcomed the organization of the extraordinary meeting of the European Council on March 6, considering it necessary in the current situation.

The interim president also presented Romania’s priorities at the European level, highlighting the importance of regional stability, given its proximity to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, a country also affected by the war launched by Russia.

Referring to the peace negotiations in Ukraine, Ilie Bolojan stressed the importance of representing European interests, including those of Ukraine’s neighboring states, such as Romania.

„The two leaders analyzed the topics that will be discussed at the extraordinary meeting of the European Council on March 6, which aims to adopt decisions on strengthening the European defense policy and continuing support for Ukraine. The interim President of Romania informed the senior European official about the consultations he will have with the political parties to establish Romania’s position at this meeting,” the Presidential Administration reported.

For his part, the President of the European Council reiterated the European Union’s commitment to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. He stressed that any peace agreement must ensure respect for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, while offering solid security guarantees. Finally, President Antonio Costa emphasized that, in order to have credibility, negotiations to end the war must involve both Ukraine and the European Union.

The two senior officials agreed to continue the dialogue in the coming period.

Acting President Ilie Bolojan will participate on Wednesday in the videoconference organized by the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa. The videoconference precedes the extraordinary European Council meeting that will take place on March 6 in Brussels.

Ilie Bolojan will consult on Wednesday, at the Cotroceni Palace, with the parliamentary parties in order to prepare Romania’s position at the extraordinary meeting of the European Council.
