President Klaus Iohannis says he is in shock after learning that the prime minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, has been shot, and „firmly condemns such extremist acts.”

„I am shocked to learn that the prime minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, has been shot. I wish him a complete and speedy recovery. I strongly condemn such extremist acts, which threaten our fundamental European values,” writes the head of the Romanian state on the X platform.

Slovakia’s social democrat prime minister Robert Fico has been shot and wounded earlier in the day, after a government meeting held outside Capital City Bratislava, in the city of Handlova, report Reuters and TASR news agencies.

According to a reporter from Slovakia’s TASR news agency, several shots have been fired at the scene of the attack, and the perpetrator has been arrested. The area in front of the House of Culture in Handlova, where the government meeting took place, has been evacuated.
