President Klaus Iohannis attended the European Council meeting on Thursday, where he sounded an alarm signal on the need to support Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova in the energy sector, in view of the approaching winter, including by advancing the interconnectivity of the two countries with the European Union.
The main topics on the European Council’s agenda were the situation in Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, the European Union’s competitiveness and migration management.
Also on the leaders’ agenda were discussions on the Republic of Moldova, Georgia, support for the multilateral system and the rules-based international order, high energy prices and other topics related to the EU’s external relations.
„President Klaus Iohannis emphasized why the European Union must remain focused on supporting Ukraine, according to its needs, on all three essential levels: political, military and economic. President Klaus Iohannis also emphasized Romania’s support for Ukraine’s grain exports, denouncing the Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports and merchant ships that affect global food security,” the Presidential Administration informed in a press release.
The head of state welcomed the leaders’ decision to follow up on the commitment made by the EU at the G7 level to grant a financial loan to Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was invited to attend the opening segment of the meeting. He presented the European leaders with a „plan for victory” in which he detailed a series of steps needed to end the conflict by 2025 at the latest.
As regards the situation in Ukraine, the European Council confirmed its support for the Ukrainian peace formula, on the basis of the UN Charter and international law, emphasizing that any initiative aimed at resolving the conflict should not be undertaken without the direct involvement of Ukraine.
