President Klaus Iohannis will travel to Brussels, where he will participate on Wednesday in the EU – Gulf Cooperation Council Summit and the European Council meeting scheduled for Thursday and Friday, the Presidential Administration announced.

The agenda of the European Council meeting includes topics such as Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, EU competitiveness, migration, foreign affairs, as well as the Republic of Moldova.

According to the cited source, European leaders will discuss the latest developments in Russia’s war of aggression, as well as multidimensional support for Ukraine and its people.

Regarding the Middle East, the „alarming” situation and the „risks of escalation of violence in the region” will be discussed. During the meeting, calls will be reiterated for cessation of hostilities and the observance of international rules, including humanitarian law, the Presidential Administration says in a release sent to AGERPRES.

At the same time, the European Council will review the progress made in the process of strengthening EU competitiveness, economic resilience and the single market.

„At the proposal of Romania, the agenda of the meeting will also include discussions regarding the situation in the Republic of Moldova, as well as about the support for the accession to the European Union, especially for the support of internal reforms and for the consolidation of resilience and stability. In the perspective of the upcoming elections and the referendum on the integration of the Republic of Moldova, the issue of Russian interference in the electoral process will also be discussed,” the Presidential Administration says.

Migration represents another important topic on the agenda of European leaders, who will analyze the implementation of the comprehensive approach in the field, agreed during the extraordinary meeting of the European Council in February 2023.

On Wednesday, before the meeting of the European Council, the first EU – the Gulf Cooperation Council Summit will be organized, aimed at strengthening the political and economic partnership between the Union and the member states of this structure, in a difficult geopolitical context, the quoted source mentioned.
