National leader of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor said on Friday in Cluj-Napoca that the only option for the incumbent government to continue is for their presidential candidate Crin Antonescu to win.
„The guarantee that this majority will govern and that it will put the country in order and right the wrongs of the government coalition from 2024 a president who has the parliamentary majority behind him. Any other option means that this government coalition will not be able to stay on its feet, because the Romanian president does not have the same powers as, for example, the president of France or the president of the United States. (…) If Crin Antonescu does not win the election, then the life of this coalition will be very short. The government remains or, after the presidential election, this government leaves. That is what is at stake for us in this presidential election,” Kelemen told a meeting of the party’s Council of Representatives (CRU).
He added that the parties of the government coalition were able to agree with Crin Antonescu.
„Why Crin Antonescu?! Because with Crin Antonescu we were able to agree. This is the only answer we can give, because the three coalition parties, plus the national minorities, had to agree with someone. He is an experienced man, we have known him for years, we have been in power together, in the coalition and we were also political opponents,” added Kelemen.
On Friday, the UDMR’s Council of Union Representatives convened in Cluj-Napoca, where Kelemen released a political report.
