Save Romania Union (USR) Chair Elena Lasconi announced on Thursday that she will sue those who are trying to commit „a brazen abuse just to secure themselves a cosy future”, stressing that the decision of the USR National Bureau to withdraw the party’s support for her presidential bid represents „a political execution concealed under party formalism.”

„I know that justice is on my side and I will sue those who are trying to commit a brazen abuse just in order to secure themselves a cozy future! A gang from within the USR is attempting to throw me under the bus, after I was validated by Congress, now, with the electoral process in full swing, without any decision from a competent authority. It is a political execution concealed under a party formalism, but in essence it has neither legitimacy nor legal basis. ABUSE, that’s what we’re talking about,” Lasconi wrote on Facebook.

She added that the USR meeting on Thursday evening was „informal” and „any scheme to push through a so-called decision is illegal”, having no legal ground.

„It is just an attempt to manipulate perceptions. An abuse perpetrated with Bolshevik methods. We are talking about a political purge in the strict sense: a democratically validated candidate is ditched with no explanation, with no legal procedure, in the name of a so-called ‘party discipline’. I have the courage to do justice! And I will do justice for myself, for my colleagues in the USR, and for you”, she said.

The USR National Bureau decided on Wednesday to convene a meeting of the Political Committee to vote on switching the party’s support to independent candidate Nicusor Dan in the presidential election in May. The announcement was made in a press conference by USR Deputy Chair Dominic Fritz, along with several members of the party leadership.

Later in the day Elena Lasconi ruled out withdrawing from the presidential race and said that she will also carry on as head of the party and will not resign.
