Protest in Victoriei Square: Gendarmes use tear gas against demonstrators who broke through fences

Published on

Gendarmes ensuring order at the unauthorized protest in Victory Square on Monday used tear gas against demonstrators who forced the public order device and threw firecrackers.

„Since the demonstrators have repeatedly forced the cordon of Gendarmes on the sidewalk of the Victoria Palace, irritant and lachrymatory agents were used. We emphasize the fact that the demonstrators threw pyrotechnic materials (firecrackers and smoke bombs) towards the security forces,” informs the press office of the Bucharest Gendarmerie.

According to the source, there are people in the public gathering who are inciting violence against the police.

„We recommend once again to all persons present in Victory Square to desist from any illegal behavior and to indicate to the gendarmes present any person who incites to violence and other violations of the law,” the cited source shows.

A few hundred people gathered on Monday in Victoriei Square in response to a call by Calin Georgescu to boycott large chain stores.

Participants cheered at the announcement of President Iohannis’ resignation and broke through the fences erected by the gendarmes in Victoriei Square. Also, they shoved the security forces and threw firecrackers at them.

Subsequently, the gendarmes have identified and extracted six people from the crowd, because they allegedly violated the legal framework in force by committing criminal offenses and misdemeanors, announces the Gendarmerie of the Capital.

„In this context, measures required by the provisions of the current regulatory framework will be taken,” the source further shows.
