PSD’s spokesman: Liberals should tone down discourse for not burning bridges with PSD

Published on

Social Democratic Party (PSD) Spokesman Lucian Romascanu on Monday said that the National Liberal Party (PNL) representatives should tone down their discourse a bit in order not to burn all the bridges as far as the relation with the Social Democrats is concerned.

Romascanu was asked by journalists why in the speeches at the PSD Congress the PNL members were attacked a lot, while extremist parties were not mentioned at all.

„First of all, I think there were also references to AUR [the Alliance for Romanians’ Union] and the rest, but I don’t remember AUR being in government or having power, so it’s obvious that we have positioned ourselves in relation to those who have decided at some point the destiny of this country. (…) Mr. Ciolacu has managed, together with the Government, to keep the executive act apart from what happens in politics. It’s an election campaign, of course there will be a bit thicker lines, but the government has to go all the way to the end,” the PSD spokesman said at the party’s headquarters.

According to him, PSD and PNL are „on two different tracks” in terms of political message, and during the electoral campaign the two parties will position themselves as political opponents.

Asked whether PSD will want to form a government with PNL after the parliamentary elections, Lucian Romascanu answered: „Looking at the political landscape, as I said in the spring, the best option for a government in the next period is with PNL. Now it is too early to say what will happen, because it depends very much on the outcome of the elections in the fall. We believe that we will get a very good score, our colleagues from the PNL should tone down their speech a bit in order not to burn all the bridges in terms of the relationship with PSD. Each of us is going with messages to our own electorate, after that politics puts you in front of some eventualities that you have to be ready to negotiate.”
