Relentess heatwave over Aug 20 – 21 throughout the country, highs of 39 expected

Weather forecasters issued on Tuesday new Code Yellow, Code Orange and Code Red heatwave advisories effective nationwide on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Code Yellow advisory of high thermal discomfort covers the south of Banat, northern and eastern Oltenia, most of Muntenia and Moldova, continental Dobrogea, the east and south-east of Transylvania, where daytime temperature highs will hover between 33 and 36 degrees Celsius.

The Code Orange advisory for persistent heat is in effect on Tuesday for the north of Banat and Crisana, Maramures, most of Transylvania, northeastern Moldova, southern and central Muntenia. The temperature-humidity index (THI) will exceed the critical threshold of 80 units, temperature highs will hit 36 – 38 degrees, and the lows will be around 18 – 23 degrees.

The Code Red heat warning was issued for the counties of Arad and Bihor, where the highs will reach 38 degrees and the heat-related discomfort will be particularly oppressive, as the THI will exceed 80 units. Nights will be tropical, with temperature lows around 18 – 23 degrees.

According to the weather forecasters, on Wednesday, August 21, certain areas in Banat, southern Crisana, southern and eastern Transylvania, most of Muntenia and Moldova, eastern Oltenia and continental Dobrogea will be under a Code Yellow heat warning, as temperatures will go as high as 33 to 35 degrees Celsius.

A Code Orange for heat and heat-related discomfort will be in effect on August 21 for the northern half of Crisana, Maramures, the northwest and center of Transylvania, the northeast of Moldova and the south and center of Muntenia, which will experience temperatures between 35 and 37 degrees.

In Bucharest, the heatwave will persist until August 22, at 9:00 a.m. The sky will be variable, with light winds and temperature highs around 36 degrees, while the low will be between 17 and 20 degrees.

The National Weather Administration specifies that the relentless heatwave will keep southern and southeastern regions in grip throughout Thursday and Friday, and at the end of the week it will spread again across almost the entire country.
