Romania’s House of Parliament will light up in blue on October 18, between 19:00hrs and 23:00hrs, the Chamber of Deputies decided on Monday, to mark the European Union Anti-Trafficking Day.

The Standing Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies approved on Monday a request in that regard from Save Romania Union (USR) lawmaker Oana Toiu and Social Democratic Party (PSD) lawmaker Florin Manole, both deputy chairs the Chamber of Deputies.

The document reads that on October 18, at the level of the European Union, the EU Anti-Trafficking Day to raise awareness over a phenomenon reported all over the world, as thousands of people are being exploited in various forms, sexually or through forced labour.

The phenomenon also concerns Romania, with the number of victims and vulnerabilities increasing, the document shows.

„Due to the large number of victims and vulnerabilities in Romania, we want to sound the alarm and increase the population’s awareness of the problem, in order to prevent this type of organised crime in our country. Last but not least, by illuminating the Parliament building in blue, Romania shows its solidarity and determination in the fight against human trafficking, thus joining the bodies around the world that mark the day in this way, both the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons and the EU Anti-Trafficking Day,” reads the request approved by the Chamber’s leadership.
