Romanians living abroad, a huge void in our nation, a failure for Romania, not a celebration, PM says

Published on

Every Romanian who leaves Romania for good is „a failure” for this country and not a celebration, said prime minister Marcel Ciolacu on Sunday evening at the Aici-Acolo Festival, organized on the occasion of the Day of Romanians Everywhere, pointing out that, when conditions at home will be similar to those outside, the Romanians will not leave anymore.

„The truth is that every final crossing over the border is a failure for this country, not a celebration. Every mother, every brother, every sister or grandchild who’s leaving, leaves a huge void both in the family that remains to suffer and in the communities from which there are part of. Void by void by void they end up forming a huge abyss in the soul of this nation, and that can’t be a celebration at all,” said Ciolacu, at the Romanian National Opera in Bucharest.

The prime minister emphasized that the departure of Romanians from our country, after the Revolution of 1989, is „the main failure of politicians”, which is why „please allow me to apologize for not being able to do more and better, I’m asking for forgiveness for we weren’t able to keep you at home.”

Marcel Ciolacu reminded the audience that „in all the meetings I have had with European leaders for almost a year since I have been prime minister, I have tried to get something for Romanians outside the borders”, and this will materialize in dual citizenship with Spain, „after almost two years of building this” for the second largest community in Spain.

In the context, he listed the meetings with some European leaders in order to obtain some facilities for the Romanians in those countries: the recognition by Italy of the Romanian Orthodox Church, the protection and improvement of the working conditions for the Romanian workers, especially the seasonal ones, in Germany, the elimination from Moldova and Ukraine of the aberrant and Soviet concept of the Moldovan language, the possibility that Romanians who want to travel to Turkey can only do so with their identity card, without a passport.

Ciolacu emphasized that the „biggest achievement” this year will be when Romania fully joining the Schengen Area.

The prime minister opined that it is the Government’s duty to convince Romanians „not to leave in search of a better life abroad”, and this will also be possible through the reindustrialization of Romania, which will lead to the revival of some areas where many Romanians have left from.
