Romania’s 2022 cross-border traffic at roughly 58.6 ml travelers, by 62% more than in 2021

Romania’s 2022 cross-border traffic numbers were a total of approximately 58.6 million people of whom 42.2 million EU citizens and 16.4 million non-EU citizens, both on the inbound and the outbound, the Border Police Inspectorate General (IGPF) reports, according to Agerpres.

„Compared to 2021, when 36.1 million travelers were registered at Romania’s cross-border checkpoints, this marks an increase of 62 percent, the IGPF said.

There were significant traffic increases for all border segments – 105.1 percent at the border with Serbia, 91.1 percent at the airport border, 96.9 percent at the border with Ukraine and approximately 76.5 percent at the border with the Republic of Moldova.

The busiest air hub was the Henri Coanda Otopeni Airport with over 11.6 million passengers, followed by Cluj-Napoca Airport with 2.4 million passengers, Timisoara Airport with approximately 900,000 passengers, Sibiu with over 600,000 passengers and Craiova with 470,000 passengers, for both arrivals and departures.

In the last year, airport border police officers handed down more than 125 sanctions for various offenses.
