Romania’s industrial production, down 1.5pct in 2024

Romania’s industrial production declined 1.5% in 2024 from the previous year, according to data published on Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

The negative result in 2024, unadjusted, was the result of decreases in the production and supply of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning (-4.7%), manufacturing (-1.1%) and mining and quarrying (-1%).

Official statistics reveal that, in December 2024 compared with the similar month of 2023, industrial production, unadjusted, increased by 0.8%, on increases in manufacturing (2%).

At the same time, the production and supply of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning, along with the mining and quarrying decreased by 4.5% and 1.1% respectively.

When adjusted for seasonality, the industrial production was down y-o-y 3.4%, amid decreases in the three industrial sectors: production and supply of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning (-5%), manufacturing (-2.9%) and mining and quarrying (-1.2%).

On a monthly basis, December vs November 2024, Romania’s industrial production, unadjusted, decreased by 13.9%, as a result of declines in manufacturing (-17.5%) and mining and quarrying (-3%). On the other hand, the production and supply of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning increased by 6.8%.

Seasonally adjusted, the industrial production decreased by 1.2% on negative results in the production and supply of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning (-3.9%), mining and quarrying (-1.7%) and manufacturing (-0.9%).
