Romania’s natural population growth stays negative in June 2024

 Romania’s natural population growth stayed negative in June 2024, the number of deceased persons being 1.7 times higher than that of live births, according to the data published on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

„In June 2024, the birth of 10,707 children was registered, down by 798 (-6.9%) compared to May 2024. The number of deaths registered in June 2024 was 18,037 (9,396 male and 8,641 female), with 1,497 fewer deaths compared to May 2024, which represents a decrease of 7.7% (-7.6% for males and -7.7% for females). The number of deaths of children with the age under 1 year registered in June 2024 was 82 children, an increase of 17 compared to May 2024,” INS mentions.

In the analyzed interval, the number of registered live births was lower by 2,530 (-19.1%) compared to the same month in 2023, while the number of deaths in June 2024 decreased by 199 (-1.1%) compared to June 2023, and the number of children under the age of one who died was by 8 more in June 2024 than the same month in 2023.

According to the cited source, the natural population growth was negative both in June 2024 (-7,330 people) and in June 2023 (-4,999 people).

In June 2024, the death of 9,222 people (4,792 male and 4,430 female) was recorded in the urban environment, and the death of 8,815 people (4,604 male and 4,211 female) in the rural area.

Compared to the same month in 2023, the number of registered deaths increased by 1% in the urban environment (-0.5% in the case of males and +2.8% in the case of females) and decreased by 3, 2% in rural areas (-4.6% for males and -1.7% for females).

In June 2024, 40.4% (7,288 deaths) of the total number of deaths occurred among people aged 80 and over, 27% (4,872 deaths) among people aged 70-79 and 17.4%, representing 3,147 deaths, in people aged 60-69. Conversely, the fewest deaths were recorded in the age groups 0-4 years (106 deaths), 5-19 years (63 deaths) and 20-29 years (100 deaths).

INS data shows that the number of marriages in June 2024 was 1,322 (+12.7%) higher than the one recorded in the same month of the previous year. By final judicial decisions and by the agreement of the spouses (administratively or by notarial procedure), in June 2024 the number of divorces decreased by 473 (-23.4%) compared to June 2023.

In June 2024, 11,769 marriages were registered at civil status offices, an increase of 2,072 (+21.4%) compared to May 2024. The number of divorces pronounced by final judicial decisions and by the consent of the spouses (administratively or by notarial procedure) was 1,546 in June 2024, down 25 (-1.6%) compared to May 2024.

In the period January 2023 – June 2024, the highest number of marriages was recorded in August 2023 (17,414), and the lowest in January 2024 (3,700).
