Romania’s negative natural growth extends into July 2024v

The natural population change in Romania stayed negative in July 2024, at minus 8,607, with the number of deaths being 1.6 times higher than that of live births, according to data published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

In July 2024, 14,458 births were registered, up 3,751 from June 2024.

The number of deaths recorded in July 2024 was 23,065 (12,045 men and 11,020 women), up 28.2% for men and 27.5% for women from June 2024.

The number of deaths of children under the age of one recorded in July 2024 was 94, up 12 from June 2024.

In July 2024, 42.2% (9,734 deaths) of the total number of deaths was in people aged 80 and over, 26.3% (6,074 deaths) in people aged 70-79 and 17.1%, or 3,951 deaths, in people aged 60-69. On the other hand, the fewest deaths were recorded in the age class 0-4 years (123 deaths), 5-19 years (74 deaths) and 20-29 years (99 deaths).

In February 2024, 13,124 marriages were recorded, up 1,355 (+11.5%) from June 2024. The number of final divorces was 1,540 in July 2024, down 6 (-0.4%) from June 2024.

According to INS, the number of live births registered in July 2024 was up 55 (+0.4%) y-o-y. The natural growth was negative, both in July 2024 (-8,607 people) and in July 2023 (-46.69 people).
