Romania’s population continued to register a negative increase in August 2024, with a decrease of 6,076 people, compared to August 2023, when the decrease was 5,556 people, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Thursday.
Official statistics reveal that, compared to August of the previous year, in the same period in 2024, the number of birth certificates for live births was 607 (+4.4%) higher, while the number of death certificates increased by 1,127 (+5.8%), and the number of death certificates for children under one year of age who died increased by 17.
Thus, the natural growth was negative both in August 2024 (-6,076 persons) and in August 2023 (-5,556 persons).
In terms of marriages, they decreased by 1.4% in August 2024 compared to August 2023, while the number of divorces concluded under final court decisions and by spousal consent (administrative or notarial) increased by 371 (+30.6%).
According to the INS, this year, August vs. July, birth certificates were registered for 14,398 children, down by 60 (-0.4%).
During the same period, the number of death certificates was 20,474 (10,758 for men and 9,716 for women), 2,591 fewer deaths, a decrease of 11.2% from one month to the next.
Also, the number of death certificates recorded for children under one year of age was 85, down nine from July 2024. Against this background, the natural growth remained negative (-6,076) in August this year, with the number of registered deaths 1.4 times higher than the number of live births.
As regards marriage and divorce, in August 2024, 17,164 marriages were registered at the civil registry offices, up by 4,040 (+30.8%) compared to July 2024, and the number of divorces pronounced under final court decisions and by spousal consent (through administrative or notarial procedure) was 1,582, up by 42 (+2.7%).
In the period January 2023 – August 2024, the highest number of marriages was recorded in August 2023 (17,414) and the lowest in January 2024 (3,700).
