Four house searches were carried out Wednesday morning in Bucharest in a case in which a bank branch incurred damages worth approximately 240,000 euros by counterfeit banknotes deposited into ATMs over three days, the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) informs, write Agerpres.
The case involved a bank branch that was defrauded of approximately 240,000 euros in November 2022 by 486 counterfeit banknotes with a face value of 500 euros being deposited into ATMs over three days.
Of these, only six banknotes were retained by the multifunction machines, the rest were accepted.
”The banknotes are part of a very dangerous type of counterfeit, being known at European level both for the high quality of the counterfeit and for the fact that they are impossible to detect with the naked eye,” the source said.
Two people will be taken to the DIICOT headquarters – Central Structure, for hearings.
The judicial activity is carried out with the support of the Directorate for Combating Organised Crime – Anti-Drug Service, with technical and forensic support provided by the National Forensic Institute. The Gendarmerie Special Intervention Brigade, and the Technical-Canine Unit of the Gendarmerie participated in the action. Specialist support was provided by the DIICOT – Technical and Forensic Bureau.
