Senate President Abrudean says coalition is strong, it has proven resilient and will remain so

Published on

Senate President Mircea Abrudean stated on Monday that despite some more or less „heated” discussions, the Coalition will keep holding firm.

„In the end, reform is carried out through the legal and constitutional means available to the Government, this also implies assuming responsibility in Parliament, as it happened in recent days, and also the four useless, populist and demagogic motions submitted by the Opposition, which were, obviously, rejected yesterday because, ultimately, the reality was reflected in yesterday’s vote. The Coalition is strong, it has proven resilient and will remain so, despite more or less heated statements and discussions. Ideally, we should no longer see such public outbursts from the parties within the Coalition, which, in one way or another, attack the measures proposed by the Government voted by the Coalition and supported by the Coalition,” Abrudean stated at the Senate.

He highlighted that the decisions are made through the agreement of ministers from all the parties in the Coalition.

„We are talking about a strong Coalition of four parties. The decisions are made in the Coalition, the decisions which come from the Government to Parliament, as was the case with the recent assumption of responsibility for these packages and for the administration package, which we hope will follow soon. They are not made ‘with a gun to anyone’s head,’ but through dialogue, through voting in the Government, informally, even through there is no formal vote in the Government meetings, but these decisions are cleared by ministers from all parties,” Abrudean stated.

The Senate President mentioned that the topic of local administration reform will be most likely analyzed in a Coalition meeting this week.

„This package cannot be postponed indefinitely. I understand the need for discussions, dialogue and further debate. The PNL [the National Liberal Party] continues to support Prime Minister Bolojan’s standpoint. There are also internal debates and related discontent within the party. It is a party with many mayors who are not particularly happy with such measures, but through arguments and justification, we can reach a conclusion that is acceptable. It will never be fully satisfactory, because that’s simply not possible,” Abrudean added.

Asked about the challenge with the Constitutional Court of the five bills for which the Government assumed responsibility, Abrudean said: „Some nerves are always there.”

„From the Government’s perspective, everything possible was done to ensure the proposals are fully constitutional,” Abrudean concluded.

Interim Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Sorin Grindeanu stated Sunday in a parliamentary sitting that the PSD does not govern „with a gun to one’s head” and is not afraid and will not be blackmailed, and will continue to insist that Romania needs an economic revival „like it needs air.”
