The representative for Romania’s relationship with the US must be a man without a party affiliation, a man with credibility, who simply represents the country, Deputy Chairman of the Romanian Senate Robert Cazanciuc said on Monday.
„We have not had a discussion inside the Social Democratic Party (PSD) about a specific person, I think that first we must agree on this principle of having a permanent representative there, who has a mission more than an ambassador has – very often a technical one, but one with an important political component. A man who is not a party man, because those in Washington do not care if he is a member of PSD, the National Liberal Party (PNL) or the Save Romania Union (USR). I said not to go there with a party membership card, but simply to represent Romania (…). There are people who constantly go to Washington, they are welcome there and above all they have credibility, when they say something on behalf of Romania, they are also listened to. It is the most important thing, in the end,” Cazanciuc said at the Parlaiment House
He was asked when a decision will be made on Romania’s representative for the relationship with the US.
In the opinion of the PSD senator, Romania needs people with authority in Washington, respected both in the US and in Romania.
„The complexity of international affair at the moment, requires, somehow, a presence of Romania in Washington that opens the doors to us when we need it, from personal experience. A year ago, while I was in Washington, an American diplomat told me: There are 200 countries that want to talk to the few decision-makers in Washington. Washington usually talks with a maximum of five to ten states, the rest need a permanent presence here, people who know how to lobby, people who open doors, people with authority, respected in the United States and, obviously, in Romania,” Cazanciuc said.
