Romania’s accession to the European Cultural Convention had a significant impact on the democratization of Romanian society, presidential adviser Sergiu Nistor said on Thursday.

He participated in a debate in the context of the meeting of the Steering Committee for Culture, Heritage and Landscape (CDCPP), which is taking place until Friday in Bucharest.

„The provisions of the conventions of the Council of Europe in the field of cultural heritage protection were, between 1998 and 2000, the benchmarks of the proposals of the Ministry of Culture for the Law on Historical Monuments, the Ordinance on the protection of world heritage in Romania. In turn, the recommendations of the Council of Europe in the field of cultural heritage inspired the secondary legislation in field. But beyond the principles and techniques of cultural heritage protection of the most diverse consistencies, the accession to the Council of Europe had a significant impact on the democratization of Romanian society and the building of a rule of law,” said Nistor.

Romania joined the European Cultural Convention of the Council of Europe on the common cultural heritage of Europe in 1991.

CDCPP President, Terje Birkrem Hovland, emphasized the importance of the Council of Europe in terms of protecting and promoting democracy. According to him, within the Council, the role of culture is „to promote democracy, human rights and the rule of law throughout Europe and beyond”.

Also the president of ICR, Liviu Jicman, highlighted this aspect and the need for unification, through culture, especially in times of crisis. In this regard, he also mentioned the network of cultural institutes in the European Union – EUNIC.

The event in Bucharest is organized by the National Institute for Cultural Research and Training (INCFC), in the context of our country celebrating 75 years since the establishment of the Council of Europe.
