Statistics: Retail turnover volume, up 8.6% in 2024

The retail turnover volume (excluding the retail trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles) recorded an increase of 8.6% in 2024, compared to the previous year, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Thursday.

According to the quoted source, compared to the reference period, increases were recorded in the sales of non-food products (+14.8%), sales of food products, beverages, and tobacco (+3.8%), and retail trade of motor fuel for vehicles in dedicated stores (+3.6%).

Official data also show that, in December 2024 compared to December 2023, the volume of retail turnover (excluding motor vehicle and motorcycle sales), on a gross series, registered an overall increase of 7.8%, due to the growth recorded in non-food product sales (+15.9%) and retail trade of motor fuel for vehicles in specialized stores (+5.2%). In contrast, sales of food products, beverages, and tobacco decreased 0.3%.

The volume of retail turnover (excluding motor vehicle and motorcycle sales), seasonally adjusted and adjusted for the number of working days, in December 2024, compared to December 2023, recorded an overall increase of 7.8%, due to the growth in sales of non-food products (+15.7%), retail trade of motor fuel for vehicles in dedicated stores (+3.1%), and sales of food products, beverages, and tobacco (+1%).

According to INS, in December 2024 compared to November 2024, the volume of retail turnover (excluding motor vehicle and motorcycle sales), on a gross series, increased overall by 2.4%, due to the growth recorded in sales of food products, beverages, and tobacco (+13.7%). In contrast, sales of non-food products (-3.5%) and retail trade of motor fuel for vehicles in dedicated stores (-1.5%) recorded declines.

As a seasonally adjusted series, retail turnover decreased overall in December 2024 compared to the previous month by 1.3%, as a result of declines recorded in sales of food products, beverages, and tobacco (-2%) and sales of non-food products (-0.9%). However, retail trade of motor fuel for vehicles in dedicated stores advanced 1.7%.
