The total value of the construction of the two sections of the M6 Metro line is close to 10 billion RON, VAT included, said on Thursday the minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Sorin Grindeanu, who, together with prime minister Marcel Ciolacu, checked the state of works on this investment site.
„We are on section 1, the one we managed to finance from the PNRR [the National Recovery and Resilience Plan], with the six stations, from 1 Mai to Tokyo station, Tokyo station being at Mall Baneasa. The other section, from Tokyo station to Otopeni, benefits from the funding that you know very well, from the Japanese Government. Of course, I cannot but say that there were some people around 2021 who removed this funding, as you remember. They said that it was not important to have a station or a metro line from Otopeni to Mall Baneasa and the loan that we took out to realize this project in 2010, of over 200 million euros, has remained unused until now and all kinds of non-utilization fees have been paid, because there were all kinds of smart people before, some very recently, who said that it was not important to make this metro line. But now, coming back to the concrete things, the total value of the two sections is approaching 10 billion RON, VAT included, so almost 2 billion euro, money that partly comes from European funds, partly comes, as the prime minister said, from the co-financing that we provide and which, in the coming years, I believe will be increasingly higher, because we manage to access very quickly all the amounts made available through European funds,” said Sorin Grindeanu.
Under these conditions, the minister continued, the „weight” will fall on the state budget, and if things will continue the same next year as in 2024, when investments were prioritized, „it’s a good thing and will lead to economic growth”.
„In terms of traffic, the greatest discomfort at the moment is in the 1 Mai area, but there, colleagues from Metrorex and the City Hall have joined forces, because there are also works that belong to the City Hall – replacement of tram lines – and these works are being carried out at the same time, so that the discomfort does not happen twice,” the Transport minister said.
Sorin Grindeanu added that works on section 1 of the M6 line is due to be completed n 2027 and on the other section in 2028. More precisely, traffic will be open as of 2028 from the North Station to Otopeni.
