Train ridership in Romania down 3pct in H1 2024

The number of passengers in Romania who travelled by train in H1 2024 was 35.54 million, down 3% year-on-year, according to data with the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Of these, 35.299 million passengers travelled inside Romania, and 141,000 took international trips.

Passenger rail transport in H1 2024 had a share of 16.6% in the total passenger transport, being far surpassed by road transport, with a share of 77.5%.

As for rail freight transport, the volume decreased by 9.8% from H1 2023, with an increase only in international transport, by 2.7%; 21.905 million tonnes of goods were transported, of which 78.5% in domestic transport.
