Turnover in retail trade up 8.4pct January through September

The volume of turnover in retail trade (except for motor vehicles and motorcycles) increased, in the first nine months of this year, compared to the similar period last year by 8.4pct as gross series, and by 7.7pct, as series adjusted depending on the number of business days and seasonality, according to a press release of the National Institute of Statistics.

Thus, the volume of turnover in retail trade (except for motor vehicles and motorcycles), saw an increase by 8.4pct as gross series, over January 1 – September 30, 2024, compared to January 1 – September 30, 2023, due to an increase in sales of non-food products (+14.2pct), sales of food products, beverages and tobacco (+4.1pct) and retail trade of motor fuels in specialized stores (+3.6pct).

On an adjusted basis, the volume of turnover in retail trade registered an overall increase of 7.7pct in the said period, due to the increase in sales of non-food products (+13.4pct), sales of food products, beverages and tobacco (+3.6%) and the retail trade of fuel for motor vehicles in specialized stores (+3.5pct).

Also, the volume of turnover in retail trade (except for trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles), decreased by 2.7pct, overall, as gross series, in September 2024, compared to the previous month, as a result of the decrease recorded in the sales of food products, beverages and tobacco (-7.9pct) and by 2.6pct respectively, in trade of fuels for motor vehicles in specialized stores (-2.6pct). Sales of non-food products increased by 1.5pct.

On the other hand, the volume of turnover in retail trade, series adjusted depending on the number of business days and seasonality, increased, as a whole, in September 2024, compared to the previous month, by 0.9pct, due to the increases recorded in the retail trade of fuels for motor vehicles in specialized stores (+2.5pct) and in the sales of non-food products (+1.3pct). Sales of food, beverages and tobacco fell by 0.5pct.

The INS data also show that the volume of turnover in retail trade (except for trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles), increased by 10.3pct, overall, as gross series, in September 2024, compared to September 2023, registered an overall increase of 10.3% , due to the increase recorded in the sales of non-food products (18.5pct), and an increase in the retail trade of motor fuels in specialized stores was of 4.3pct. Sales of food products, beverages and tobacco increased by 3.9pct.

On an adjusted basis, in September 2024, compared to the same month in 2023, an overall increase of 10.7pct was recorded, due to the increase in sales of non-food products (+19.0pct), retail trade of motor vehicle fuels in specialized stores (+4.5pct) and and increase in sales of food products, beverages and tobacco (+4.3pct).
