Two maritime cargo ships collided on Wednesday in the Sulina Canal as one of them was attempting emergency anchoring. No casualties were recorded in the incident that occurred at the Danube River 18th milestone, the Romanian Naval Authority (ANR) reports.
Sundry, a ship under Panama flag, was headed for Tunisia with 6,228 tons of barley on board, when it suffered a malfunction in the main engine, which forced the crew to anchor in emergency mode.
„During the maneuver, the ship was hit by the Liberian-flagged tanker Mazu Xiao, which was sailing upstream from Constanta to Izmail, carrying 6,620 tons of diesel fuel. The Mazu Xiao continued its march and will drop anchor in Tulcea Port for additional investigations into the incident. Sundry incurred damage in the stern area and will be kept in Sulina for investigations,” the ANR release states.
No casualties or pollution were recorded following the incident, and traffic along the Sulina Canal carries on normally.
The Sulina Port Authority opened an investigation in order to determine the causes and circumstances of the event.
