UDMR wants to enter government after elections and prepapred a programme, says leader Kelemen Hunor

UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania) leader Kelemen Hunor on Friday told a press conference in Arad that the Union wants to enter the government after the elections, for which purpose it prepared a „diagnosis” of the society and a programme.

„We have prepared a political programme, which is an electoral programme, but I do not deny that it is also, in fact, a governing programme, because after the parliamentary elections [we have – editor’s note] this desire to be part of the Executive, a desire of each party, of every political entity, a legitimate desire, and it is also our desire, if we will have the support of our electorate and if there will be conditions met for us to be part of the Executive in an extremely difficult period for Romania, with huge challenges and with a budget situation that is not very good,” said the UDMR leader.

Kelemen Hunor believes that one of the biggest problems of the country is the demographic one.

„For about three years I have been talking about this problem, this challenge, and I say that, according to all the calculations, if we continue like this, somewhere in 2050, Romania will have less than 15 million inhabitants. And this is still not the biggest problem, but the age structure will be the problem, because it will be an aging society, which will cannot be supported by the labour force, neither the social system, nor the pension system or the healthcare system will do well in that context That is why we are in the last moment, in the last hour, we need long-term policies, through which we must try to keep people at home, in their country, we need to support the birth rate, and we need to support the young people,” the UDMR leader also said.

The president of the UDMR added that the demographic problems affect both Hungarians in the country and the society as a whole.
