UDMR’s Kelemen: We are ready to build together with the newly elected president

Published on

UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania) chair Kelemen Hunor on Monday evening stated that his party is open to dialogue with the newly elected president, Nicusor Dan, and ready at the same time to build alongside him.

„This afternoon, the elected president, Nicusor Dan, called me and expressed his appreciation to the Hungarian community and to the UDMR for the support they provided. He also saw that we acted as a united front, showing an exemplary mobilization, almost beyond our own limits. We are open to dialogue and ready to build together with the newly elected president,” Kelemen Hunor wrote on Facebook.

The elected president, Nicusor Dan, claimed on Monday that it would be „ideal” for the PSD (Social Democratic Party), PNL (National Liberal Party), USR (Save Romania Union), UDMR and the parliamentary group of national minorities to form a stable government.

He told B1 TV private television station that he had a meeting with the interim president, Ilie Bolojan, during the afternoon, and together they discussed „for an extremely long time” the budget deficit, a subject of common „concern.”

„I met with Mr. Bolojan. Now I’m coming from the meeting I had with him. I also saw Dominic Fritz last night, he came to my campaign headquarters. I haven’t called Mr. Kelemen Hunor yet, but I’ll call him tonight, because there was a very impressive mobilization of ethnic Hungarians and UDMR contributed a lot to this [victory in the elections – editor’s note]. We are waiting to see what happens in the PSD, because we all know there are some tensions there. (…) The ideal is that all four parties, plus the minorities, to form a government, so that we have a stable government,” stated the president-elect.

Nicusor Dan added that Ilie Bolojan is his option for the office of prime minister, but he does not promise that this will be achieved, because there are „many entities, each with their aspirations, with their proposals” for this position.

„It is an ongoing discussion. Each of the people involved has certain expectations, certain conditions and all of this must be harmonized,” he explained.

The president-elect estimated that a difficult period will follow for „at least a few months” from an economic point of view, because Romania „has thrown money away” for at least three years, and now „this situation must be corrected.”
