The US State Department has approved the sale of a MIM-104 Patriot firing unit to Romania, the US Embassy in Bucharest announces, indicating that this firing unit will replace the system that our country supplied to Ukraine in September 2024.
According to the cited source, the MIM-104 Patriot system includes an AN/MPQ-65 radar set and two M903 launch stations.
„This firing unit will replace the system that Romania provided to Ukraine in September 2024. Patriot can detect and shoot down a wide range of ballistic and airborne missile threats, and this acquisition will strengthen Romania’s capacity to deter aggression in the Black Sea region,” the US Embassy in Bucharest said in a statement sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.
Ambassador Kathleen Kavalec stated that the United States appreciates Romania’s continued support for Ukraine, including the donation of a Patriot system to support the country’s defense.
„Romania’s commitment to integrated air defense strengthens the protection of Romanian territory and the NATO alliance, making America and our allies safer,” she said.
With an estimated cost of 262 million dollars, the system will be purchased through grants from a group of NATO donors.
