Wholesale turnover down 2.1pct January through October, according to Statistics Institute

Turnover in wholesale trade (except for trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles) decreased, in the first 10 months of this year, compared to the corresponding period in 2023, both as gross series by 2.1%, and as series adjusted depending on the number of business days and seasonality, by 1.9%, according to data made public by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Friday.

Turnover in wholesale trade (except for trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles), gross series, during the period January 1 – October 31, 2024, compared to the similar period in 2023, saw a decrease as a result of the decrease in the wholesale trade of raw agricultural products and living stock (-22.7%), the wholesale trade of consumer goods, other than food (-6.7%) and the intermediation activities in wholesale trade (-5.9%). Increases were recorded in: non-specialized wholesale trade (+15.0%), wholesale trade of information and telecommunications equipment (+8.6%), specialized wholesale trade of other products (+6.5%), wholesale trade of foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco (+1.0%) and wholesale trade of other machinery, equipment and supplies (+0.2%).

According to the INS, the turnover in wholesale trade (except for trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles), gross series, in October 2024, compared to the previous month, increased, overall, by 1.4%, due to the increase in turnover in wholesale trade of IT and telecommunications equipment (+15.0%), non-specialized wholesale trade (+4.1%), wholesale trade of foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco (+2.1%), wholesale trade of consumer goods, other than food (+1.8%), specialized wholesale trade of other products (+1.4%) and wholesale trade of other machinery, equipment and supplies (+0.3%). Decreases were recorded in wholesale trade of raw agricultural products and living stock (-8.3%) and intermediary activities in wholesale trade (-2.2%).

As series adjusted depending on the number of business days and seasonality, turnover in wholesale trade (except trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles) decreased in October, overall, by 1.3%, compared to the previous month,

Also, turnover in wholesale trade (except for trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles), gross series, in October 2024, compared to the similar month in 2023, decreased, overall, by 4.6%, as a result of the decrease in wholesale trade of raw agricultural products and living stock (-47.8%), wholesale trade of other machinery, equipment and supplies (-7.2%), wholesale trade of consumer goods, other than food (-3.3%) and intermediation activities in wholesale trade (-2.5%). Increases were recorded in: non-specialized wholesale trade (+18.8%), wholesale trade of information and telecommunications equipment (+16.4%), specialized wholesale trade of other products (+8.3%) and wholesale trade of foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco (+7.3%).

The turnover in wholesale trade (except for trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles), series adjusted depending on the number of business days and seasonality decreased, overall, by 6.9% in October 2024, compared to October 2023.
