Youth unemployment (15-24 years olds) remained high in May 2024, at 20.5%, up from 19.7% at the end of Q1 2024, according to data with the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Tuesday.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.4%, up 0.1 percentage points on a monthly basis.
By gender, male unemployment exceeded female unemployment by 0.2 percentage points, 5.5% to 5.3%. The high level of 20.5% youth unemployment continues to be noteworthy, according to INS.
The estimated number of unemployed people aged 15-74 in May 2024 was 452,100 people, up both on a monthly basis (443,600 people) and year-on-year (443,200 people).
Adult unemployment (25-74 years olds) is estimated at 4.4% for May 2024 (4.4% for women and 4.5% for men).
The number of unemployed people aged 25 to 74 made up 77.4% of the total number of unemployed estimated for May 2024.
