PresidentialElection2025/ Nicusor Dan: Early elections would not be appropriate for Romania

Published on

Bucharest mayor Nicusor Dan, an independent candidate in the presidential election, declared on Tuesday that organizing early elections would not be appropriate for Romania, regardless of who wins the election for Cotroceni Palace.

„I hope we are not in the scenario you mentioned. Regardless of who wins the Romanian Presidency, it is not appropriate for Romania to organize early elections, because we have been in a situation of instability for more than a year, since the elections began. We had canceled elections, we had an interim president. Now we have an interim government. Early elections mean, again, a few months of instability. No. Romania has a Parliament, which has three and a half years left in its mandate and the president must collaborate with this Parliament, to give a government formula”, Nicusor Dan told a press conference held at his campaign headquarters.

He opined that „it was not appropriate” for PSD head Marcel Ciolacu to continue holding the position of Prime Minister after November 2024 elections.

„I don’t want to comment too much. I don’t think it was appropriate for Marcel Ciolacu to continue leading the Government after November’s elections. Moreover, there are two weeks in which Romania will experience, at the governmental level, a provisional situation. It happens all over the world. The important discussion is about governance immediately after May 18”, the mayor emphasized.

Asked if a minority government of USR-PNL-UDMR-minorities would be possible, possibly supported by PSD in Parliament, the mayor-general replied that it was „one of the options”. On the other hand, he stressed that the discussion about the future government is a „very serious” one and will take place immediately after the second round of the presidential election.

„Romania needs reforms, it needs a government that has the courage to make these reforms. Furthermore, which of the pro-Western parties in Parliament want to assume this, what the government lines will be, is a technical discussion, and this discussion will begin immediately after May 18”, he added.
