Five Ukrainians rescued in mountains, sixth person remains missing

Five Ukrainians were rescued from the mountains during the night from Wednesday to Thursday in two separate rescue missions. and all are in good condition, while a sixth person remains missing, and search efforts will resume if new clues about his location emerge, announced Dan Benga of the Maramures County Salvamont Public Mountain Rescue Service (SPJ).

In the first rescue mission, two young people, a man and a woman, who crossed the border into Romania through the Maramures Mountains near Copilasu Peak (1,611 meters altitude), were rescued.

„The two Ukrainians, a 23-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man, were rescued and after a six-hour mission, were handed over to the authorities. They had no medical issues. They were exhausted, wet, mildly hypothermic, and hadn’t eaten for several days,” said Dan Benga.

Romanian authorities were alerted to their situation by friends of the two, who are in Finland.

Later the same night, rescuers, with the help of border police, recovered three more Ukrainians from the mountains: a 44-year-old and two others aged 23 and 25, who were at a shelter on the Vaser Valley.

„None of them had medical issues. They were picked up, brought down, and handed over to the authorities after a four-hour mission,” added Dan Benga.

A third rescue operation that night, in search of a young Ukrainian in the Cigarlau-Vinderelu area, was unsuccessful.

„The boy’s father, desperate to find his son, hadn’t had contact with him for more than six hours. He gave us a set of coordinates, but the boy was not found there. Later, a relative of the boy from Italy called 112, providing another set of coordinates, which turned out to be incorrect. The father came back, asking us to search at a third set of coordinates. In despair, he admitted he didn’t actually know the boy’s location and had chosen random coordinates from Google Maps, hoping the rescue teams would find something there. After six hours of night searching, the rescuers returned to base. If new clues emerge, the search will resume,” Benga said.
