Interim JustMin: At present, the country is governed; Justice must stay out of any political calculation

The government is managing the country’s affairs and specific activities continue as usual, so the country is being governed, interim Justice Minister Radu Marinescu said on Thursday.

He underscored that justice must remain outside any political calculation.

„I don’t want to comment on the statements of the candidates, especially during such an important electoral period. What I can say, and have always said, is that justice must stay outside of any political calculation, outside of any electoral context. Justice must rely solely on the law, the rule of law, and the preservation of our democracy, which meets European standards,” said Marinescu, when asked before the government meeting about comments made by presidential candidates regarding the justice system.

When asked about the depreciation of the leu and whether it affected him financially, the minister replied: „It’s a well-known phenomenon, I don’t think I’m the one you should be asking about this.”

„From my perspective, we have a single duty at this moment as an interim government, and that is to continue managing the country’s affairs until a new government is formed. Certainly, this may be a burden on our citizens, we are in a difficult economic moment. We all have the responsibility to manage it wisely and with balance.”

Asked why an interim Cabinet was chosen and whether Marcel Ciolacu made a mistake by resigning as prime minister, the minister pointed out that the decision was made by the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (PSD).

„It was a decision assumed by the party leadership. As long as a coalition is formed on certain coordinates and common political goals, if those are not fulfilled, the coalition loses its purpose. In the end, the reasons for forming the coalition had to do with the public interest. If those are no longer met, the coalition loses its meaning. That was PSD’s assessment. I repeat, at present the government is managing the country’s affairs and specific activities continue so that the country is governed,” Marinescu added.

The interim government led by Catalin Predoiu held its first meeting on Thursday.
